The word “yoga” comes from the root word “yuj,” which means “to yoke” or “to bind.” The word itself has numerous meanings, from an astrological conjunction to matrimony, with the underlying theme being connection.
Yoga asana is the physical practice and postures of yoga.
The scientific research into yoga’s benefits is still emerging, but much of the evidence so far supports what practitioners seem to have known for millennia: Yoga is incredibly beneficial to our overall well-being. According to the John Hopkins School of Medicine, the benefits of yoga include:
-One-hour yoga classes in the community
-'Gentle Yoga - for restricted mobility
-Personal/one-to-one and small group instruction.
-Children’s yoga to support emotional development.
-Restorative yoga, breathing exercises (pranayama/bandhas), mantras and meditation.
Activities are led by an Ashtanga/Iyengar yoga teacher trained in India.
Working on both a physical and a psychological level its techniques represent a de-stressing programme for the whole body.
By massaging the head and shoulders, energies will become rebalanced and a general feeling of relaxation will be achieved for the whole body.
It can improve blood flow to the head and neck, which increases the distribution of nutrients to encourage healing within the whole body.
